What is a "justice of the peace"?
Be in the Know before You VOTE for Justice of the Peace:
- In Douglas County, being an attorney is NOT a requirement to serve as Justice of the Peace.
- "Experience" or "training" as an attorney does not qualify someone to be a Justice Court Judge.
- Once elected, Justice Court Judges attend "Judicial College."
Be in the Know about Nevada's Justice Courts:
- Nevada’s Justice Courts are limited-jurisdiction courts.
- Justice Court Judges determine whether felony or gross misdemeanor cases have enough evidence to be bound over to a District Court (the higher court) for trial.
- Justice Courts preside over non-traffic misdemeanor, small claims, summary eviction, temporary protection orders and traffic cases. (Yes, they also perform marriages, but divorces are held in District Court)
- The Justice Court Judges are also responsible for "back of the house" tasks including staffing, scheduling, statistics, paperwork, and other administrative duties.
